Prescott Regional Airport Live Fire Training – August 27, 28, and 29, 2020

Prescott Fire Department will conduct live fire training at Prescott Regional Airport on, August 27-29.   As a result, Citizens and air travelers may see a plume of smoke or what appears to be an aircraft on fire at Prescott Regional Airport on the north side of the Airport between 12:00 PM and 5:00 PM on Thursday, August 27, Friday, August 28, and Saturday, August 29.   The annual training is required by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to be completed by Airport Rescue & Firefighting (ARFF) personnel in order for the Airport to serve our community with commercial airline flights.

The Prescott Fire Department and the Airport Department regularly conduct these training exercises along with other training in order to maintain proficiency in the specialized tactics and equipment required to fight aircraft fires and to ensure compliance with Federal Aviation Administration guidelines.

The three, one-day training sessions will be provided by 139FIRE™, utilizing a mobile propane-fed aircraft fire training simulator.  The simulator is designed to replicate not only fire on and around the aircraft’s fuselage, but also require the response personnel to understand and properly operate equipment on an aircraft, such as door access, throttle controls, battery shut-offs, and onboard extinguishing systems.

For more information on the live fire training, please contact Airport Administration at 928-777-1114 or by email at AirportAdministration@prescott-az.gov.

DOT Reselects SkyWest Airlines, Operating as United Express to serve Prescott Regional Airport

The US Department of Transportation (USDOT) has issued Order 2020-7-2, awarding a new Essential Air Service (EAS) contract to SkyWest Airlines, branded as United Express. The USDOT contract assures continuation of double-hub, non-stop service for Prescott, Prescott Valley, Chino Valley and the Verde Valley leisure and business travelers for three years, commencing on September 01, 2020.

“After decades of underperforming air service providers at PRC, we are excited the USDOT has seen the value SkyWest has provided to the citizens of Northern Arizona during the current EAS contract,” said City of Prescott Mayor Greg Mengarelli.

“We are pleased to continue serving the Prescott area and know our passengers can fly with confidence thanks to the additional measures being taken on every flight,” said Greg Atkin, SkyWest managing director of Market Development. “From enhanced cleaning, mandatory face coverings and customer self-assessments with check-in, we remain committed to the health and safety of all onboard our aircraft.”

Passengers flying from Prescott Regional Airport – Ernest A. Love Field (PRC) will continue to enjoy convenient service to Denver International Airport (DEN) and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) onboard the 50-passenger Bombardier CRJ200.

The EAS program was established to assure that small communities maintain a minimal level of scheduled air service and access to the national air transportation system.  In January 2020, the USDOT requested proposals from air carriers interested in providing Essential Air Service at PRC for a new contract term. SkyWest Airlines, the incumbent carrier, was the only carrier to submit a proposal.

“We appreciate the strong partnership that has been forged between SkyWest Airlines, operating as United Express, and the City of Prescott, “ noted Airport Director, Robin Sobotta. “Since service launched in August 2020, more than 85,000 total passengers have enjoyed the convenience associated with flying out of Prescott to hundreds of United destinations. In early 2021, their travel experience will be further enhanced with the completion of the new Prescott Regional Airport Passenger Terminal.”

An in-person meeting will be held on March 11th, 2020 from 4pm to 5pm at Prescott Regional Airport Administration Building located at 6546 Crystal Lane, Prescott, AZ 86301 for the purpose of consulting with stakeholders to obtain information relevant to the goal-setting process.

Willmeng begins construction on new passenger terminal at Prescott Regional Airport Ernest A. Love Field

Willmeng Construction Inc., a Phoenix-based commercial general contractor and Fann Contracting, a Prescott-based heavy civil construction company, recently began construction on a new $13.9 million, 18,000 SF passenger terminal at Prescott Regional Airport – Ernest A. Love Field, which will replace the current 1940s terminal. Upon completion, the replacement passenger terminal will continue serving the current commercial air service with flights from Prescott to Denver and Los Angeles. Designed by DWL Architects, Phoenix, construction is expected to be completed in the spring of 2021 and will allow for easy expansion as air service continues to grow.

Funding for this project would not have been possible without support from the FAA and state partnerships. Prescott Regional Airport has seen a dramatic increase in passengers utilizing commercial air service when United Express, operated by SkyWest Airlines began service in August of 2018. Since then, over 73,000 passengers have used the service.

Arizona State Governor, Doug Ducey, recently visited the site and remarked on how the development occurring throughout Yavapai County and the addition of the new passenger terminal are great representations of the development that’s possible throughout the entire state of Arizona.

“The airport is a major economic driver for this entire region and as we see the economy continue to grow, there is great opportunity for more economic development around the airport,” said Greg Mengarelli, Mayor, City of Prescott. “This new terminal is only the beginning as we look at future expansion.”

With the addition of the new passenger terminal, commercial service apron, baggage handling system, vehicle parking and roadway, residents of Prescott, Prescott Valley, Dewey-Humboldt, Chino Valley, Camp Verde, Cottonwood, Clarkdale, Jerome, Chino Valley, and Sedona will be able to enjoy an enhanced travel experience.

“We’re very thankful for Dr. Sobotta’s leadership, the support of Mayor Mengarelli and the council, and the whole team surrounding this project,” commented James Murphy, President and CEO of Willmeng Construction, a general contracting firm that has completed several aviation projects recently. “DWL Architects did a great job integrating glass into a modern, yet rustic façade. We’re very excited to go vertical with construction in the months ahead.”

“It takes local support to make things happen. We ask for these three simple things, that the local community respects the asset, acts as a good steward, and when we provide federal money, spend it.” Mark McClardy, the FAA’s Director of the Western Pacific Region remarked, “This was a very competitive process. We had about 167 applications from different airports, but only four grants were issued. We are all in for Prescott.”

Over 200 invited guests gathered to celebrate the groundbreaking in January, including local, state, and federal officials, many of whom had the opportunity to publicly share impactful stories and their excitement regarding the project.

“We couldn’t have done it without the hard work, the vision, and the support of so many.” Dr. Robin Sobotta, Airport Director, City of Prescott, explained, “An economic generator is happening in our community. Thank you to our engineering, design, and construction partners who turn dreams into reality, you’ve done it for us! I’m glad we’re building our first terminal together.”

Construction on this project will not interfere with flights or airport activity, making the execution of this project ideal for all parties. The partnership between Willmeng Construction and Fann Contracting pairs local connections with airport construction expertise.

Wings Out West Airshow Wins Award For Best in the Country

The 2019 Wings Out West Airshow, a partnership between Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and the City of Prescott, has won the gold award for “best small civilian airshow in the country” from the International Council of Air Shows (ICAS). More than 60 other airshows were in competition for the award, which was presented at the annual ICAS Convention on Dec. 11 in Las Vegas, Nev.

As the climax to Embry-Riddle’s annual homecoming celebration, Wings Out West 2019 attracted more than 10,000 spectators to the Prescott Regional Airport on Oct. 5 and included a variety of aerial demonstrations and historic reenactments. Headlined by Embry-Riddle’s own Matt Chapman flying his last career airshow, the day also honored the 75th anniversary of the D-Day invasion. Lt Col Dave Hamilton (USAF Ret), the last living Pathfinder who flew on D-Day was the guest of honor, with other World War II veterans present.

“This award acknowledges the hard work by our joint University and Community team, to highlight not only our region’s significant and continuing contribution to aviation, but the heroic accomplishments of our ‘Greatest Generation’ on behalf of a grateful nation and world,” said Embry-Riddle Professor and Airshow Director Jerry Kidrick. “The people attending were truly entertained by world class aviators and showed their patriotism on numerous occasions during the day as we highlighted living and past heroes.”

The Wings Out West Airshow has developed into an annual community event. Its positive impact to the region reflects a growing, vibrant community as well as the increasing emphasis aviation is having worldwide, reflecting the growing need for a next generation of aviators, engineers, and experts in global security and intelligence, safety science, and cyber technology. The Airshow is proving a tool for the Prescott region to highlight its contributions to our nation and the world.

“The Airshow is a great example of the appreciation the university has for the community and the community has for the university,” Kidrick added. “Our Chancellor and Mayor are to be commended for their clear leadership to accomplish so much together– now and into the future, for this and other joint initiatives.”

The 2020 Wings Out West Airshow is currently scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 3.
